The Elko Police Department bicycle patrol is a specialized unit that is utilized in the summer months and consists of (2) two man teams.
The duties of the bicycle patrol are essentially the same as a patrol officer working in a car although it encompasses many other duties such as bicycle rodeos for children as well as bicycle safety programs.
The bicycle patrol is a voluntary program offered at the Elko Police Department and the training and day-to-day patrol schedule is very physically demanding. The training consists of a 5-day class, which includes a number of long distance rides totaling over 250 miles as well as drills that cover officer safety, bicycle safety, an obstacle course and firearms qualifications. The course is a Nevada Post Certified class and is also taught and offered to agencies within Nevada as well as other states.
The bicycle patrol is not only a fun and exciting duty of the Elk Police Department but also is an invaluable tool in talking to the public and dealing with the citizens on more of a one-to-one basis.
